Growing is Legal, Now What?

Growing is Legal, Now What?

As part of the Cannabis Act, it is legal for Canadians to grow up to 4 cannabis plants for personal use.  Please note, each province has slightly different rules and regulations around growing(with two provinces, Quebec and Manitoba banning home grows altogether).  Please check your provincial regulations if you are unsure, although that sounds like a lot of effort.........(happy toking!)

The Basics:

Cannabis can be a slightly more difficult plant to grow than your typical garden variety vegetable or flowerbed plant.  Nonetheless, don’t be scared off as, as you can do it.

An indoor grow in soil will be your best bet, opposed to a hydroponic or aeroponic setup.

You will need:

1.       A grow tent or grow box.

2.       Lights and ventilation (nothing complex is required for a single plant grow).  At a future time, I will write a blog post and provide links to tents that I have used in the past and worked well for various price points.

3.       A pot for your soil and plant.

4.       Seed or clone.

5.       Other miscellaneous growing supplies.

A small 2x2 tent is perfect for any little nook or closet.

Starting Materials:

Unfortunately, as of today, you cannot legally acquire the starting materials (buy seeds or clones) in the recreational market.  The Licensed Producers currently do not sell seeds or clones at retail in Canada.  Various LPs have stated they will be selling these (seeds or clones) into retail at some point in 2019.  If you are a medical cannabis patient, you can order clones legally via THC Biomed.

Regardless, you can easily acquire the starting materials today via grey market channels (reddit, headshops, formerly “novelty” seeds).  Don’t let this stop you, and start your grow today!

If this is your first grow, then I would recommend you grow an auto-flower.  This will allow you to experience your first grow in an achievable manner and learn lessons for future grows.  Additionally, autoflowering plants are smaller and easier to grow, all key ingredients for your first grow.

Don’t be intimidated by the grow process, it can be a very simple, rewarding and educational experience.  I would encourage all cannabis smokers who are curious or intrigued to try a grow once, as it is a fun and healthy hobby.  If you aren’t at all interested in growing, then you should definitely encourage your friend to grow and just stick to smoking the best quality cannabis you can purchase.

Happy Smoking and Growing!
