Highbrow Guide to Cannabis Lingo and Life as a Canadian Smoker
We the North and Weed the North are two slogans that truly encapsulate the Toronto experience and vibe from 2013 until today. Fueled by the hardwork, sacrifice and dedication of advocates, patients and those that came before us, cannabis was finally getting the respect it deserved. It was a cultural reformation and a city on the rise, fresh off the shine of Drake and The Weeknd, Canadians love weed and its a part of their daily life. Patients and recreational users alike, could toke freely in the city, with a number of great vape lounges sprinkled across the city and a consistent cloud of smoke hovering over Trinity Bellwoods Park.
With 2021 upon us, cannabis retail mania has taken over and cannabis is finally easily accessible across the province of Ontario (via in-store retail, online retail and medical channels). With the emergency lockdown ending and our population quickly getting fully vaccinated, you will want to remember these tricks for your next in-person session and when the 14 gram cannon is passed your way.
Highbrow’s Favourite Cannabis Lingo and Slang
Session - a group of people smoking up! Blaze it up #420 “We had a huge session in my backyard and enjoyed the sun.” It is customary to show off your finest cannabis products and share joints with friends.
Dab - consuming a cannabis concentrate or extract by using a dab rig. #dablife “Tommy just ripped a massive 1g dab on IG Live.”
Hash Knives - heating knives on your stove and then pressing your hash between the “hot knives” and inhaling the vapour with a straw (or BIC pen).
Bottle Tokes - breaking off little chunks of traditional pressed hash and using the cherry of a cigarette, to create a vortex into a plastic water bottle, which is then inhaled through the neck of the bottle. “The Canadian boys rip BTs like its going out of style.”
Hoot - taking a pull or a “hit” of a joint or vape.
Hits from the Bong - “Pack it, smoke it, light it up and toke it……………..”
Jamaican Shower - when you leave the shower running on the hottest setting to steam up the washroom. You then proceed to light multiple joints and have a session in the steamy environment.
Hot Box - smoking in a small enclosed space and the exhaled cannabis smoke has nowhere to escape or ventilate. This is could be a car, powder room, or any number of locations. “Let’s go hotbox Jimmy’s 1994 Civic Hatchback.”
Gravity Bong / Buckets
Spliff - in Canada, we generally only put cannabis into our joints (we don’t mix in tobacco). For many international smokers, this is intense as they aren’t used to chain smoking full cannabis joints.
Pinner - a very small or narrow joint, often only a one or two hitter.
Bogart - someone who hogs the joint, is slow on passing it or keeps it all to themselves. “Billy didn’t bring any weed to the session and then Bogarts the joint lol!!!”

Twaxed - a joint that has rosin, budder, or a cannabis extract added to the roll.
Solventless concentrates - purest expression and essence of the trichome (bubble hash, rosin).
Live Rosin - a solvenltess extracted product using fresh frozen as input material.
Live Resin - an extracted product made using fresh frozen and BHO.
Fresh Frozen - cannabis plants that are brought down and immediately frozen with liquid nitrogen and flash freezing technology.

Trikes - trichomes and the different sized heads.
Roach - The end or remainder of a joint (filter, plus residual weed and resin) which is often saved and re-rolled into a join made of many roaches. When you wake up in the morning you might take a small puff from each of the remaining roaches.. “The cops searched my car and found all of my roaches and tossed them all over my interior.”
BHO - “Butane Hash Oil” is an extract that is produce by “blasting” cannabis using butane as a solvent. “Jimmy was open blasting in his studio apartment and making some fire slabs.”
Heroic Dose - when someone eats an ill-advised amount of edibles. “Time is going to collapse upon into a million micro-verses and a stop motion storyboard based on the heroic does of edibles that he consumed.” Please remember to consume responsibly and follow the packaging guidelines.
